How are currencies converted into each other, for example dollars to euros?
Via sums: first the currency you give is converted to sums at the rate at which the bank buys it, then the sums are converted into the target currency at the selling rate. At the Central Bank rate one official rate is used both ways. A bank may charge a fee or use its own cross rate.
Which rate is best for exchanging currency?
The Central Bank rate is a benchmark; banks need not exchange at it. At cash desks banks buy currency below the official rate and sell above it, so the calculator shows the best cash-desk rates among the banks on the site. A good bank nearby can be found on the currency’s rate page and on the map.
